Mock Trial is a trial simulation where teams from universities all across the United States compete against one another.
Each year the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) publishes a case, alternating between criminal and civil, that teams analyze for the given season. The case consists of a series of witness affidavits and select pieces of evidence.
The University of Illinois Trial Team prepares both sides of the case (plaintiff/prosecution and defense) and travels throughout the country to compete against other Universities. There are opening and closing statements, direct and cross-examinations, and witnesses to portray. The performance of each member is scored by a panel of judges throughout the round.
